The relationship between India and Turkey, though often overlooked in mainstream diplomatic discourse, occupies a unique and intriguing place in contemporary international relations. Beyond History: The Evolving Political Relations of India and Turkey emerges from a desire to examine this underexplored bilateral dynamic through a nuanced and multidimensional lens. The title reflects a central conviction of this book — that while history continues to shape perceptions and diplomatic postures, the present and future of India–Turkey relations demand to be understood in light of evolving global realities, shifting power alignments, and changing domestic priorities in both nations.
India and Turkey share deep civilizational roots that stretch back centuries — from cultural exchanges along ancient trade routes to the shared experiences of colonial modernity and the struggle for national selfdetermination. Yet, the trajectories of their modern nationhoods have been shaped by distinct political philosophies and geopolitical alignments. While India emerged as a secular democracy with a non-aligned foreign policy orientation, Turkey’s evolution from the Ottoman Empire to the secular republic, and more recently toward a more assertive global posture, has followed a different yet equally complex path. Understanding how these divergent political narratives intersect, complement, or conflict with one another is the foundation of this study.
This book seeks to move “beyond history” — not by disregarding it, but by transcending its limitations as the sole interpretive framework for bilateral analysis. It delves into the political, strategic, and economic dimensions of India–Turkey relations while considering the cultural and ideological undercurrents that influence policy decisions and mutual perceptions. The chapters explore how both nations negotiate their roles in an increasingly multipolar world, how regional conflicts and alliances shape their diplomatic behavior, and how domestic political transformations in Ankara and New Delhi resonate across international platforms such as the United Nations, the G20, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
